Let’s understand all these concepts from a Business Studies student's perspective.
- February 2022: Rockstar Games announced that Grand Theft Auto VI was in active development.
- December 5, 2023: GTA VI’s first trailer was launched on YouTube.
- May 6, 2025: GTA VI’s second trailer was launched on YouTube.
- 25 June 2026: Pre-orders opened for GTA VI.
- August 28, 2026: GTA VI’s Extended Look was released on YouTube and Netflix.
There is a large gap between each date and the last Grand Theft Auto V game was released in 2013, so how does Rockstar Games keep its customers interested in its latest product?
Here comes the power of marketing, branding, product, price, place, promotion, advertising, sales promotion, publicity, consumer information and e-business.
Let’s discuss the Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto (GTA) VI marketing game.
Selling Sells One Copy; Marketing Sells Millions of Copies
Would you purchase an unknown game title from Steam or the Epic Games Store?
No?
But what is the reason?
Because as a customer, you won’t spend your money on an unknown brand.
This proves that marketing leads to selling.
Selling simply means when customers pay for your product. However, when it comes to marketing, it contains different aspects, such as:
- Understanding customers
- Creating a suitable market offering
- Communicating its value
- Making the product available to customers
Rockstar's GTA VI campaign is mainly focussing on marketing and then on selling. By opening the pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI in June 2026, the company officially stated that the game is available for purchase.
To make customers aware about their product, Rockstar initiated the communication years earlier by introducing Trailer 1 where viewers enjoyed the atmosphere of Vice City; Trailer 2 provided a strong relationship between the main characters (Jason and Lucia); and the extended look focused on showing the exclusive gameplay footage captured on PS5.
Think What Your Customers Want
Can you survive by playing videogames?
No?
This is because a videogame does not satisfy a basic physical need such as food or shelter. Instead, it serves the wants related to entertainment, storytelling, challenge and recreation.
Every gamer knows what Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto series is about; therefore, the company is not promoting the game as “another game.” Instead it is being presented as a lifetime experience where gamers can enjoy a large, detailed world containing characters, locations, vehicles, stories and activities.
When the company’s official description conveys GTA VI as the biggest and most immersive evolution of the series, this connects especially well with the product concept.

Explaining Marketing Mix
Marketing mix contains four important elements:
Product: The First P of Rockstar's Marketing Mix
Let us begin with Product, which is the first P in the marketing mix.
The core product is GTA VI itself. However, Rockstar has created different versions, such as Standard Edition and Ultimate Edition for it.
In the Ultimate Edition, players can experience additional vehicles, weapons, clothing and other in-game benefits connected with Jason and Lucia's story.
Additionally, Rockstar has used simpler names for their characters (Jason and Lucia) and city (Vice City) throughout its official communication.

Branding: What’s In The Name?
In Romeo and Juliet (Act 2, Scene 2, William Shakespeare (the main author) wrote one line that became a worldwide phenomenon: What’s in the name?
But in recent times, name matters the most. What if Rockstar Games releases GTA VI without mentioning Grand Theft Auto on its cover page, would anyone purchase it?
Would the game receive the same excitement?
Probably not.
Branding brings a distinct identity to a business. A strong brand name highlights that your product or service can be easily distinguished from competitors.
Additionally, branding showcases a product’s colours, logos, mascot, and more.

Price: Sell to Make Profits
In marketing, the second place is taken by Price.
Rockstar Games officially announced the following prices for GTA 6 in the United States of America (USA):
- Standard Edition for $79.99 (in-game content only)
- Ultimate Edition for $99.99 (extra in-game content)
However, how do they finalise this price for a product?
Were there any factors involved in finalising this price?
Yes, several factors affected the price, which are:
- The cost of the product
- Demand and utility
- Competition
- Government and legal regulations
- Pricing objectives
- Types of marketing methods used
Place: Where Can Customers Buy GTA VI?
The third P in the marketing mix is Place, which can be online or offline channels or a combination of both.
For a product business, there is a requirement of warehouses, transportation, wholesalers and retailers.
Earlier, games were available in gaming stores, such as GameStop, EB Games, Micromania, and CeX. The story was simple: customers enter the offline market, select their games, purchase them, and exit the premises.
However, the gaming industry is witnessing a new revolution in 2026 where companies are not manufacturing game discs. Rather they want their customers to visit the digital stores like PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and Rockstar Games Store and purchase GTA 6.
Therefore, gaming companies prefer online stores over offline shops.
Promotion: Make GTA 6 Visible Everywhere
Since the announcement of the new Grand Theft Auto game in February 2022, we have only been hearing about it from various sources, such as YouTube videos, podcasts, blogs, interviews, official and unofficial website content, etc.
Rockstar knows the marketing game, and it has planted the fourth P, i.e., Promotion, quite well.
Promotion is divided into the following categories:
In fact, Rockstar is not depending equally on every one of these. Instead, some elements are much more suitable for a global videogame.
Advertising
As discussed above (link Real-world example of perfect branding here), trailers created worldwide hype and became a major form of promotional communication for GTA VI.
In short:
- Trailer 1 generated awareness among global gamers.
- Trailer 2 showed more of the characters, setting and visual quality.
- The Extended Look provided 26 minutes of exclusive gameplay on PS5.
Moreover, Rockstar’s official website is home to new screenshots, videos, featured material and artwork content.
Rockstar took a new route in the advertising ecosystem by allowing the visuals of the product to communicate its features instead of explaining every detail in a long advertisement.

Sales Promotion
In simpler terms, sales promotion provides short-term incentives that encourage customers to purchase.
In this case, Rockstar provides a clear example.
The company officially stated that purchases made before 20 November 2026 include the Vintage Vice City Pack.
To make its customers more satisfied, the makers of GTA series said that qualifying digital pre-orders also include a free month of GTA+.
Offers like these won’t benefit the main product; however, they are required to push customers to make a purchase within a specified period.
Publicity
Every type (whether positive or negative) of publicity is publicity for a product.
For the positive publicity, we have already discussed how GTA VI broke the internet when it was announced, became the most watched trailer on YouTube, discussions happening on various platforms, and more.
For the negative publicity, GTA VI has come under the eyes of numerous hackers. The game had several cybersecurity attacks in September 2022 and December 2023. Recently, Cyberleek group has announced that they have the complete game with them and they are releasing its gameplay in parts.
Due to these illegal activities, both the company and the game have garnered sympathy from the public, leading to more product awareness.
Is Personal Selling Missing?
Now consider another promotion-mix element: personal selling.
Would Rockstar send a salesperson to every gamer's house to explain GTA VI?
Obviously not.
Personal selling involves direct interaction between the salesperson and the prospective customers. It can be extremely useful for products that require detailed explanation or negotiation.
But a mass-market digital videogame is sold to millions of people.
That makes trailers, online stores, publicity and digital advertising much more practical.
Provide Information in Pieces
Rockstar is not communicating the full information about its latest game release. Instead it is providing puzzles so that people keep discussing the game.
Even after analysing the trailers, extended look, official website, you won’t be able to generate a viable answer. Like this, GTA VI will remain in people's minds for a long time and leave a long-lasting impression.
PlayStation + GTA VI = The Best Combination
Several gaming consoles are available in the market, but Rockstar's official GTA VI website currently displays “Plays Best on PlayStation 5.”
Do you know the reason?
Sony and Rockstar have mutually worked on PlayStation 5 features, such as fast loading, haptic feedback, better control, adaptive triggers and 3D audio.
This collaboration has invited the following marketing concepts:
- Product information: Customers are being told how the product will use particular console features.
- Promotion: Those product features become reasons for customers to become interested in the game and the platform on which it runs.
Consumer Protection is a Priority
Rockstar is working on its toes to provide information regarding the GTA 6 release date, supported platforms, editions, and pre-order benefits. Moreover, the company has officially stated several times that its physical version contains a download code rather than a disc.
To a customer, this information matters.
Suppose a customer purchased a physical box expecting a disc and discovered only afterwards that it contained a code. That could create immense dissatisfaction.
Clear product information helps customers make an informed buying decision.
This is where marketing and consumer protection meet.
Quick Points for Class 11 and 12 Students from GTA VI Release
- The product gives customers something they value.
- The brand name makes the product immediately recognisable.
- The price communicates what customers must exchange to obtain that value.
- The place decision makes the game available through digital stores and retailers.
- Advertising creates awareness.
- Sales promotion gives customers additional reasons to order early.
- Publicity spreads information much further when people and media organisations start discussing the product themselves.
- And e-business allows the buying and distribution process to operate electronically across different countries.
Conclusion
Undoubtedly, Rockstar is performing every marketing act to promote its GTA VI. Although the game has a scheduled 19 November 2026 release date, its marketing story has been developed over the years.
If you still have a mystery around the story and characters, it means the company’s marketing strategies are working in the right direction.
Keeping the customer excited till its release date is not an easy task. Behind the curtains, the company is creating a product people value, giving it a recognisable identity, communicating that value, making it available at the right places and giving customers reasons to remain interested until the final exchange finally takes place.
